Rapeseed oil

RypsiRapeseed oil is produced by extraction from the seeds of two major rape varieties (Brassica rapa & Brassica napus). Because of their small differences, both varieties are often treated as one entity, for example, in the statistics.
  • Typical yield approx. 1 ton/hectare (equaling one-quarter of oil palm yields).
  • Main producers: Europe (also in Finland), Canada, China, and India.
  • Primary users: food industry (64%), oleochemical (2%), biofuel (31%) industries.
  • Primary feedstock for traditional biodiesel (FAME).
  • Neste Oil has used surplus rapeseed oil for which there has been no market in the food chain in Finland.
  • Together with its partners in Finland, Neste Oil is developing better yielding oilseed rape plant varieties.
